WAFLW Round 8 Wrap

Halfway through the WAFLW season and our League team is 3 and 4 and is in a 4-way battle for a place in the top 4. West Perth have shown when they bring their best it matches it with the top teams and this week’s game was no different taking it up to and defeating the 4th placed Subiaco. It was a game that our Falcons were able to dominate possession that were far more attacking and effective than their opponents, which allowed the Falcons to come away with a confidence building 11 point win, 6.5 (41) to 4.6 (30).
West Perth came out of the blocks fully switched on with good intensity and even though Subiaco were able to score the opening goal, it was the Falcons that looked more settled.
Ebony Jackson continued her strong defensive work and took a great overhead mark. West Perth’s run was allowing for fast breaks and putting pressure on the Lions defence.
Elissa Price who has been used as the back-up ruck a lot this season, won a stoppage and with pressure from Emily Bennett, who was great all day, forced a turnover, and with a string of kicks the Falcons were able to get over the Subiaco defence and Tia Bergin kicked a smart goal. The pressure applied by West Perth was putting Subiaco under the pump and they deserved the lead at quarter time, which was a lead they would never surrender.
The heat kept coming for the Lions, when a rebound out of the defensive 50 allowed Jeevna Heer to tap in front of herself and using her pace run on to it and then deliver to Bianca Webb and after a 50-metre penalty found Katherine Bennett on the lead, who goaled.
Repeat stoppages were working in West Perth’s favour as they were winning the clearances. Tia Bergin collected one of those clearances and hit Bianca Webb on lead inside 50 and she added more pain.
Another inside 50 stoppage led to another goal after the very nimble Grace Betti was able to keep the ball in the forward line and Bianca Webb kicked her second.
Subiaco marked right on siren and goal reduced margin to 16 points after a dominant quarter by West Perth, who controlled the ground balls and were working hard around the packs.
Jeevna started the third quarter very well picking up several vital possessions that continued to drive West Perth’s advantage, Jess Roper was winning some one-on-one contests, Bianca Webb and Brooke Hongell were sweeping across half-back which showed that the intensity hadn’t dropped off during the long break.
Kayla van den Heever also worked into the game and was consistently incepting just back of centre and creating attacking moves.
While Subiaco may have won the hit-outs, Karry Plummer was competing really well and won several vital contests that resulted in goals or forced the ball forward.
West Perth’s ability to link by hand was running Subiaco ragged.
Emily Bennett who was outstanding marked an attempted clearance at the top of the 50 kicked to Grace Betti who sold a bit of candy and straightened for a goal.
The third quarter was one where the Falcons weathered whatever the Lions were throwing at them and yet were still able to score a goal to none.
Taking a 19-point advantage into the final quarter, the Falcons did go into a bit of save mode and the Lions were certainly turning on the pressure and were able to keep the ball inside their forward 50 for extended periods and with a couple of goals were able to get everyone on the edge of their seats, but with all the grit and determination West Perth were able to keep them at bay and with the final siren sounding and Liza Kneebone scoring a goal after to put the margin back out to the 11 points.
