WEST Perth was outplayed by South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval on Friday night.

The Bulldogs used the football better and took nearly double the number of marks that the Falcons did. This enabled their big men to hand off to their midfield and provide their forwards with a host of opportunities. West Perth’s pre-season form had been very good but it wasn’t reflected in the game that had both sides struggling in the blustery conditions.

The Falcons hit the lead for the first and last time of the game after Rohan Kerr finished from the square when on the end of a series of  a pass from Steve Potente. Kerr showed his class on a number of occasions during the game and was one of West Perth’s best. WEST Perth has quickly turned its focus to next Saturday's home opener for 2015 against Peel Thunder following losses for the league, reserves and colts against South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval in Round 1.

West Perth opened the WAFL season for 2015 up against South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval on Friday night and even though the Falcons kicked the first goal of the game, they never again held a lead with the Bulldogs ending up winning 14.6 (90) to 8.7 (55).

With the colts and reserves then also losing to South Fremantle on Saturday it wasn’t the way the Falcons wanted to start the 2015 season, but the chance to bounce back presents next Saturday against Peel Thunder at Joondalup's HBF Arena.

WEST Perth's focus on returning to finals action in 2015 begins this Friday night at Fremantle Oval when the Falcons take on South Fremantle in the opener to the 2015 McDonald's WAFL Premiership season.

The match bounces down at 7pm at the port with the game broadcast on 720 ABC Perth and Grandstand Digital. The colts will play on Saturday morning at Fremantle Oval at 9am with the reserves to follow at 11.30am.

Both West Perth and South Fremantle are looking to start their seasons off with a bang, but the Falcons are coming into the new year off a disappointing 2014 and have looked good on the track and in the two pre-season hit outs so far.

WEST Perth coach Bill Monaghan realised the Falcons didn’t kick enough goals in 2014 and he is confident that will change in 2015 with a good mix of talls and smalls in the forward-line for his team to try and do just that.

With a combination of Nick Rodda, Marcus Adams, Michael Lourey, Max Alexander and Shayne Zanetti providing tall options, Matt Fowler, Matt Johnson, Luke Meadows and Kody Manning as mid-size options and then Corey Chalmers, Chris Franklin, Steve Potente, Marc Crisp and Brayden Antonio as small forwards, that looks to be a forward-line capable of plenty of goals in 2015.

West Perth was able to finish the 2014 WAFL season with a strong percentage of 112.43 to have the third strongest in the league behind only grand finalists East Perth and Subiaco, but that was largely because of the Falcons' defence.

WEST Perth took a leap of faith to start official pre-season training a little later in build-up for the 2015 WAFL season largely in order to keep the support staff fresh, and coach Bill Monaghan sees no reason to think it won't pay off.

Official pre-season training didn’t start for the whole West Perth senior group until late November in comparison to the customary late October or early November beginning.

However, that doesn’t mean the players were given the green light to not do any hard work during that period away from the club or that the same amount of work hasn’t still been put in.
