IT IS easier to say when you are on the right side of the scoreboard but West Perth won a classic game of football against Peel Thunder at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah on Saturday.

Many spectators agreed that it was one of the best WAFL games that they had seen for a long time after West Perth hung on for a four-point victory. There was a lot of symmetry to the game as scores were tied at quarter and three quarter-time and the Falcons led by four points at the main break and full-time. The win kept West Perth in second spot heading into the bye next week.

A highlight of the game was the accurate kicking of both sides and that was evident from the first bounce. Both sides had kicked two goals each by the seven-minute mark. The first Falcons score went to Tyler Keitel who kicked a goal with his first kick in league football. Chris Keunen kicked the second after a clever intercept, sidestep and accurate finish from 30 metres out. Peel then dominated play to kick four consecutive goals and open up a 25-point lead by the 19-minute mark. But then in a remarkable turnaround West Perth replied with the next four goals and at the end of the 35-minute quarter had levelled the scores. Matt Johnson, who finished with four for the day, started the fight back with a clever snap under pressure from 40, the next was a terrific goal on the run from Corey Chalmers after a slick handball from Keitel. Drew Rohde marked and after receiving a 50m penalty narrowed the margin to just six and at the 32-minute mark Jay van Berlo maintained his run of goal scoring to kick accurately and level the scores at 6.1 (37) apiece.

WEST Perth and Peel Thunder played one of the most attacking, high-scoring and entertaining contests of the WAFL season on Saturday, and the Falcons got the last goal of the contest to end up winning by four points at Bendigo Bank Stadium.

Both teams were coming off losses last weekend against East Perth and Claremont respectively, and needed a win to consolidate their spot in the top-five and both certainly put on quite a show for those in attendance in Mandurah.

The scene was set with six goals apiece in the opening quarter and it was always likely to come down to whichever team could kick the last major that would win, and that ended up being Corey Chalmers for West Perth and the Falcons ended up winning, 17.9 (111) to 17.5 (107).

WEST Perth has a short turnaround to rebound from the WA Day Derby loss to East Perth to now return to the winner's list on Saturday against Peel Thunder in Mandurah to maintain second spot heading into the bye with young key position player Tyler Keitel to debut.

Peel Thunder and West Perth have both had similar rollercoaster seasons so far in 2015, sit on the same record and have played out some thrillers in recent years with it all point to a hard fought and tight affair at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday.

Peel hosts West Perth in Mandurah on Saturday with the Thunder and Falcons both entering the contest inside the top-five on 5-4 records with the winner likely to finish the round in second position while the loser could end up out of the top-five altogether.

EAST Perth had the better of West Perth in the WA Day Derby at Medibank Stadium on Monday. After an even first term the Royals had the better of the contest and they drew away to record a 48-point victory. The home side consistently took advantage of any West Perth errors to hurt them on the scoreboard and this was the difference between the two sides.

WEST Perth couldn’t put together a third stunning comeback in the last five games with East Perth recording a 48-point victory over the Falcons in the WA Day Derby at Medibank Stadium.

Despite East Perth kicking the opening three goals of the game, West Perth did hit back and end up hitting the lead by quarter-time and again early in the second quarter.

However, East Perth kicked 11 of the last 15 goals of the derby to end up winning 18.11 (119) to 10.11 (71).

WEST Perth looks to continue its momentum it had prior to the State game last week with the Falcons aiming for a third straight win and to further consolidate second spot on the ladder in Monday's WA Day Derby against East Perth at Medibank Stadium.

Neither East Perth nor West Perth have forgotten what happened just three weeks ago when they last met and now that sets up a WA Day derby clash on Monday at Medibank Stadium with plenty of the usual spice that is there between the two fierce rivals.

Back in that game, East Perth blew a 42-point lead late in the third quarter to end up losing by 38 points and that was a game that the Royals were hurt by, and will be desperate to bounce back from but the Falcons took plenty confidence out of kicking the last 12 goals of that game.
