THERE are no more fierce rivals in WA football than West Perth and East Perth, and they meet in a preliminary final at HBF Arena on Sunday with the prize of a grand final on the line.

The game will be broadcast live on Channel 7 as well as radio stations 720 ABC Perth, 91.3 SportFM and KIX Digital.

West Perth and East Perth most recently played in the 2013 grand final, and have had some remarkable contests since then as well with anything capable of happening both on and off the field. Read More [+]

JORDAN Jones is in contention to be a surprise inclusion for West Perth in Sunday's WAFL preliminary final against East Perth at HBF Arena as the Falcons try to inject some fresh legs for what will be their 11th consecutive match since their last bye.

West Perth's last bye was way back in Round 15 with the Falcons playing the last eight games of the home and away season without another break, but they were able to secure second position on the ladder having won 13 of 20 games.

West Perth then proved too good for a weakened Peel Thunder side winning by 109 points in the qualifying final at HBF Arena, but it was a tired looking outfit in the second half of last week's second semi-final against Subiaco with the Lions kicking 13 of the last 16 goals to win by 55 points.

WEST Perth will return to HBF Arena this Sunday to host East Perth in the WAFL preliminary final with a place in next Sunday's grand final on the line against Subiaco.

West Perth has won 10 of its 11 games at HBF Arena this season, with the only loss coming with nothing at stake for the Falcons in Round 23 against Claremont, and now the Falcons need just one more victory to advance to a grand final for the second time in three years.

West Perth's opponent on Sunday in the preliminary final will be arch-rival East Perth with the Royals having played in the last two grand finals against West Perth and Subiaco, but coming up short, and now looking to get back to a third successive decider.

WAFL semi-final weekend didn’t go to plan for West Perth with all three grades losing with the Falcons' reserves and colts seeing their seasons ended, but the league side now turns their attention to a preliminary final against East Perth.

West Perth had a day to remember to open the finals for 2015 at HBF Arena the previous Sunday with the league side thrashing Peel Thunder by 109 points in a qualifying final, and the reserves and colts winning elimination finals over East Perth and East Fremantle respectively.

However, it was the complete opposite this Sunday with the colts losing at Bendigo Bank Stadium to Peel Thunder and the reserves going down to Swan Districts at Medibank Stadium on Sunday night with both Falcons teams being eliminated as a result.

IT was a day that didn’t go to plan for West Perth on Sunday. The league team was defeated after a strong first quarter, the reserves were eliminated after establishing a handy early lead and the colts were also knocked out after a slow start to their game in Mandurah.

At least the senior side will have another chance in the preliminary final at HBF Arena on Sunday. Even though the results were disappointing it does not take away from the terrific achievement of West Perth being the only club to have three teams play finals and go into the second week.

The Falcons played a very good first quarter against minor premiers Subiaco at Medibank Stadium on Sunday. Dangerous Lions forward, Shane Yarran, kicked the first goal of the match at the one-minute mark but the Falcons then took control to kick the next three. Key forward Michael Lourey scored the first two. The first was from outside 50 after taking a strong mark. The next was at the nine-minute mark when he was on the end of a Jay van Berlo pass. The Nine News logo will remain on the West Perth jumpers for all other matches not being broadcast on television.

WEST Perth's league, reserves and colts teams all recorded impressive finals wins last Sunday at HBF Arena and if the Falcons manage to do it again this Sunday, one grand final and two preliminary finals appearances will be the result.

West Perth's league side thrashed Peel Thunder by 109 points last Sunday to move into this Sunday's second semi-final against Subiaco at Medibank Stadium with a grand final berth at stake. A loss and the Falcons will host the preliminary final next Sunday against either Peel or East Perth.

The Falcons reserves beat East Perth last Sunday to move into this Sunday's first semi-final against Swan Districts at Medibank Stadium. The game will be played after the league fixture and a win will see West Perth set up a preliminary final against either South Fremantle or Subiaco.

The colts will be in action at Bendigo Bank Stadium in Mandurah up against Peel Thunder at 11.40am and a win for West Perth will see them move into the preliminary final against either Claremont or Swan Districts.

SEPTEMBER is finally here and nothing beats finals footy. It's why we play the game. One of the greats in Brent LeCras used to always remind us "You play footy for two reasons - footy trips and premierships."

Although we knew he kept quiet on his third reason of "the hot chips from the food van." 

All the hard work that the players and coaches have put in since November last year now counts for something and we have the chance to be a part of something special together. There is great enthusiasm amongst the group and the boys want to do what they can to make the most of the opportunity. However nothing will come easy.
