WEST Perth's longest-serving coach Bill Monaghan talks following Saturday's narrow loss to Subiaco at HBF Arena and looks ahead to this Saturday's clash with South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

QUESTION: Worked hard but just couldn’t get over Subiaco in the finish?
ANSWER: I thought our first half, especially when we were challenged halfway through the second quarter when they kicked a couple clear, was good when we fought back well. But we just weren’t able to match them in the third quarter. All the statistics that we were pretty happy with at half-time like contested possessions, clearances and inside 50s swung in their favour. In the end it was more of a case of they just wore us down, but the players kept coming right to the end. A couple of better choices with ball in hand and some better execution might have changed the result.

WEST Perth might have fallen 11 points short in a hard-fought battle with Subiaco at HBF Arena on Saturday but it was a memorable occasion for the Falcons with the women's team scoring a big win over East Perth.

The West Perth Football Club has brought in the Falcons female football team under its banner in 2017 for the first time and celebrated the start of the WA Women's Football League on Saturday with West Perth playing East Perth prior to the men's league contest.

That saw West Perth defeat East Perth in a dominant performance winning 17.18 (120) to 0.0 (0). It was quite the statement to start the new era for the West Perth Football Club.

The WA Football Commission has been conducting a once-in-a-generation review of WA football to ensure the long-term success and sustainability of WA football at all levels.  The WAFC engaged external global strategy consultants, The Boston Consulting Group, to thoroughly assess the current effectiveness of WA football structures and make recommendations.

The WAFC has reviewed the BCG report and in conjunction with other research work undertaken by the WAFC, developed the Structural Review of Football Report - WAFC Structural Review of Football.

We believe this reform agenda paves the way for an exciting future for WA football and I look forward to engaging further with you to provide more details of this report so we can seek your feedback prior to finalising our final reform recommendations.

IT was a tight match but a 12-minute burst by Subiaco in the third quarter was enough to undo a brave West Perth effort.

The Falcons were in the contest all day but were unable to take their opportunities up forward and as a result fell 11 points short. There was no doubting the commitment of the players as they battled hard throughout the match but were unable to take home the four points.

WEST Perth's longest-serving coach Bill Monaghan discussed the Falcons' Polly Farmer Shield victory over East Perth and looks ahead to the challenges Subiaco pose this Saturday at HBF Arena.

QUESTION: It's never pretty in the opening game of the season but you would have liked a lot that you saw particularly in the second half?
ANSWER: It's really hard to judge where everyone's at as a competition early days and it's probably even harder when you have the first week off. I went and watched a lot of games and I was especially impressed by South Fremantle and then they lose this week, so it's just going to be nearly impossible to be confident with who is good or bad on any given week. It was a long eight days from Round 1 to our first game and 15 days from the last time we played because we really didn’t know where we're at. I'm really happy that the players have worked extremely hard to get themselves fit and work on some slight changes to our game style. They were rewarded but we're under no illusions that we're going to have to keep improving because right now East Perth aren't at the top of the tree. They might be at the end, but we have to make sure we keep looking forward and put this one in the bank, be happy with the win and move on quickly on a six-day break.

WEST Perth has claimed the inaugural Polly Farmer Cup opening its 2017 WAFL season with a 21-point win over East Perth at HBF Arena on Sunday.

Following the bye in the opening round, West Perth made its first appearance for 2017 and it was up against arch-rivals East Perth on home turn at HBF Arena with the Polly Farmer Shield on the line named in honour of one of Australian football's legendary figures who played with both clubs.

Little separated the two teams all day either in a typically spirited contest between the two clubs. There were nine lead changes along the way but the last one went West Perth's favour 17 minutes into the third term with a goal to Steve Potente.

THERE was a lot to like about the first game of the year against East Perth. All three grades recorded a hard fought victory.

Senior coach Bill Monaghan had his 100th victory as Falcons coach; this is the first time that this has been achieved. It confirms how good a coach he is as the players do give their best for him.  Scott Nelson and Nathan Alexandre made their debuts. The local products more than held their own.

Experienced Victorian big man Scott Simpson also debuted and showed that he is going to be a valuable acquisition. It was also pleasing to see younger players Tyson Moulton, James Batterham, Dean Munns, Corey Chalmers and Kris Shannon rewarded for their pre-season form and perseverance by being chosen for the season opener.
