AARON BLACK COLUMN - THE WEST AUSTRALIAN

Monday, June 12, 2017 - 6:53 PM - by Aaron Black

We have a big milestone achievement this week, as Andrew Strijk plays his 200th game, making him the 20th player in West Perth’s 132-year history to do so.

A wonderful achievement for a fantastic servant and even better personality from our football club. As we take on Swan Districts in a must win game, there is no bigger motivation to win than to do it for one of the best to have worn the red and blue jumper.

Debuting for West Perth in 2006, Strijky was drafted by the Eagles in 2010, playing 13 games over a three-year span before winning a premiership in 2013, a fairest and best also that year and representing the state on six occasions to cap off his very impressive resume.

Swans-Falcons games never fail to disappoint and this was yet another tremendous contest with plenty on the line and milestones on either side of the fence to celebrate at Steel Blue Oval.

Both teams entered the contest with 6-3 records and with South Fremantle's loss to Peel on Saturday, it opened the door to only be percentage out of second spot with a game in hand.

FALCONS WINNING RUN ENDS AT HANDS OF ROYALS

WEST Perth's impressive WAFL winning streak came to an end at the hands of East Perth in the WA Day Derby at Leederville Oval with the Royals taking out a 46-point win.

East Perth and West Perth were both coming into the derby contest in impressive form with the Royals having won their last four games, and the Falcons their last five heading into last Saturday's historic state game victory for the WAFL over the VFL in Melbourne.

That set the scene for what shaped as a terrific derby battle at Leederville Oval on WA Day and the crowd responded with 5289 attending in what was the biggest turnout so far this WAFL season across the opening 11 rounds.

FALCONS UNABLE TO MATCH IN-FORM ROYALS

Tuesday, June 6, 2017 - 11:44 AM - by Darrell Kent

West Perth was outplayed by East Perth at Leederville Oval on WA Day. On paper it appeared to be a difficult task to defeat the home team that was bolstered by the inclusion of fourteen AFL listed players. Unfortunately for Falcons supporters this proved to be the case and they were defeated by forty six points. The East Perth run through the midfield provided their forwards with a host of opportunities and they took full advantage in the 14.19 (103) to 7.15 (57) victory.

WA DAY DERBY PREVIEW V EAST PERTH

Sunday, June 4, 2017 - 11:04 PM - by Chris Pike

WEST Perth was in hot form winning five matches on the trot leading into the state game and now will look to keep it going and put an end to East Perth own winning run in the WA Day Derby at Leederville Oval.

It could very well be the most intense rivalry in the WAFL and now East Perth takes on West Perth on WA Day at Leederville Oval with both putting significant winning streaks on the line.

East Perth and West Perth both made slow starts to the 2017 season, but prior to the state game break last week each of them had been in impressive winning form.

Those winning runs now go on the line in the WA Day Derby at Leederville Oval on Monday.

The game will also be broadcast live from 2pm on Channel 7.

BILL GETS GRILLED – BILL MONAGHAN ROUND 10 Q & A

Tuesday, May 30, 2017 - 4:51 PM - by Matt Barnsley

WEST Perth premiership coach Bill Monaghan discussing his team's win over Claremont that made it five on the trot prior to the state game break and then a WA Day Derby clash with the also in-form East Perth at Leederville Oval.

QUESTION: Happy with that performance to beat Claremont to make it five straight heading into the break?
ANSWER: What’s pleasing is we got a win against a side who’d been struggling a little bit for a few weeks and they came out and threw a fair bit at us. The contested possession and the clearances we were well behind early. To fight through that and get the victory made it a good win.

Q: Pretty close to a good four-quarter performance?
A: I would have thought that as a spectacle it was pretty ugly. We didn’t kick the ball overly well. Both sides were poor in front of goal. There was ups and downs and I thought the third quarter in particular for us was a big plus. We were all over them, dominated field position, inside 50s and we just couldn’t convert enough inside forward 50 from our entries. To Claremont’s credit they came out and they rolled the dice a bit in the last quarter. It's hard to be good across all four quarters so we probably achieve that today, but again a 32-point win I’m going to go home and be relatively happy.
