Womens Footy: WAWFL Preliminary Final 30 August 2009

It was a perfect day for football at Lathlain Oval as the Joondalup Falcons took on favourites Coastal Titans in the Preliminary Final to earn a spot in this coming Sunday’s Grand Final against the South Fremantle Bulldogs.

There were smiles all round as a mixture of nerves and excitement stirred up emotions in the Falcons that only a football player could imagine.  Even from before the bounce, the intense battle began as the teams lined up, opposing one another.  Falcons captain, Bronte, won the toss, and picked the side of the ground that Paris asked her to pick to give them an advantage in the first quarter.  Then, after the huddle, with a shout of “We are: Falcons!  We are: Falcons!  We are: Falcons!”, the game was on, set to be their hardest battle yet.

The Falcons got off to a slow start, trailing by two goals early in the game.  But after some undisciplined play by the Titans and some brilliant moves by captain and vice captain Bronte and Tammy, the Falcons were able to catch up, going goal-for-goal with the Titans through out the first three quarters of the game.

At three-quarter time, the scores were level at 29 points each, and it was at this point that the Falcons knew they had to dig deep to find that “whatever it takes” that coach Bernie had been telling them to use.  With some brilliance from star centre player Sabrina, and excellent defensive skills from the “best back-line in the league”, the Falcons were able to hold off the determined Titans, to win a thriller, 38 points to 30 points.

As the final siren sounded, there were cheers all round, as the Falcons realised all their hard work and commitment had paid off, they were into the Grand Final.  They sang their song loud and proud to their supporters and thanked the Titans for a hard-fought game.

Back in the clubrooms, coach Bernie called for another recital of “It’s a Grand Old Flag”, during which the Falcons couldn’t celebrate enough.  Inaugural Joondalup Falcons players Jayne, Bronte and Sabrina couldn’t wipe the smiles off their faces as they knew there were into another Grand Final, one that would be a rematch against the fierce Bulldogs, who they defeated in their first year, 2007, to take out the flag.
